Image: spectrogram, the usual way of cleaning soundtracks of noises that get into recordings and which are detected on the basis of colours of different intensity and place on the spectrum.

In the summer of 1959 the Estonian non-fiction film producer and opera singer Friedrich Jürgenson and his partner tried to record the birdsong of a finch in order to use it in one of their documentaries. In the forest near their home Friedrich placed a tape recorder and remained silent as he tried to record the birdsong. On returning home, he played back what he had recorded.

The sound was clean and clear, the wind, the leaves as they moved, the song of the finch, but... there was something else. On the recording he could also hear a human voice imitating the sound of the finch which then started talking in Norwegian, commenting on the birdsong. Jürgenson supposed that it must have been someone who was also in the forest at the time who he had not been aware of. So, the following day he returned to the forest, but first checking the area to ensure that there was nobody about, and once again he placed the tape recorder beside the finch’s nest. When he returned home satisfied, Friedrich played back the recording. This time there was no one whistling but there was a voice. A voice which he recognized as his own dead mother calling him. Friedel … my little Friedel …. Can you hear me?

In this two-day workshop we will experiment with the boundaries between art and magic in order to defy the logic of our surrounding world.

A workshop led by Raisa Maudit, a multidisciplinary artist whose work is defined by representations of individual and collective desires, needs and expectations in conflict with socio-political standards, generating experiences that are transformed into little acts of subversion.

This workshop is within the scope of the CA2M long-term activities developed for  educational centers, in particular with those schools surrounding CA2M, with the intent to strengthen collaboration ties with diverse educational agents. For a second year, the activity targets third year students from primary education schools closest to CA2M. This time, La Sonidera will lead this project.

In a society with an audiovisual, radio and sound predominance introduced as exploring means that may provide new sensorial and creative new experiences, this workshop proposed to recover the so popular radio-plays from the 60´ to work aspects such as identity, gender or reality construction. Students from Beato Simón de Rojas will practice listening in search of new perception means. They will also invent stories to be performed using their voices and homemade music and sound effects, working with the body and presence. Through these stories, they could imagine different worlds while develop their capacity to question already-formed ideas about the creation of sound spaces.

La Sonidera is an Ángeles Oliva & Toña Medina´s creation, where they both work in the radio creative field. Thought their radio performances (radio-works designed to be performance with the public), they investigate issues like fears, genders or surviving. Their interest in sound experimentation has taken them to bring back the soundman figure, that person in charge of making the sound effects in radio soap operas, giving a home-made atmosphere to stories with any kind of objects. They claim the radio warmth and its capacity to create mental images as unique means to generate reflection spaces.

Aimed at 5th and 6th grade Primary education pupils.

Musician Nilo Gallego has created a space of experimentation, where every Tuesday, a group of local children gather. Every week, they work on listening, and learn about the possibilities of experimental sound and of expanded theater.

Nilo Gallego is a musician. He produces performance pieces in which experimentation with sound is the starting point. In his pieces, which always have a component of play, he looks for audience participation, and interaction with the environment and with everyday life. He plays the drums, percussion, and electronics.

This project is premised on the need to work with the communities that are closest to the museum, in activities the can stretch in time, in order to build stable, flexible, and lasting relationships. For the fourth year in a row, we offer an after-school for third grade primary pupils.

Throughout this academic year we have developed a new, long-term line of work with two schools in the periphery of Madrid. In the face of the gradual disappearance of art education from the school curriculum, we posited the idea of a residency project, based on the work of an artist in a primary school during school timetable, and in all the possibilities such an initiative would generate. The artists are Pilar Álvarez and Alejandro Simón, and the schools are Beato Simón de Rojas in Móstoles and Trabenco in Leganés, respectively. In parallel to the project, under the guidance of Aida Sánchez de Serdio, Mercedes Álvarez has produced a research project on the possibilities of the work model developed by the Center's educational team with artists and teachers.

On the 25th of June we will hold a work session with all parties involved in the project, in order to share the experience.

As part of our ongoing long-term policy, this school year we ran three artist residencies in three public schools on the outskirts of Madrid: María Jerez in CP Parque Aluche, the El Banquete collective in CP Juan Pérez Villamil and Amalia Fernández in CP Beato Simón de Rojas, these last two in Móstoles.

In the face of the growing disappearance of art courses in the official state curriculum, we believed that it would be an interesting challenge to introduce artists into schools with the purpose of developing projects which involve materials that, in principle, are not normally associated with art practice. We were interested in exploring how artists can influence schools and, vice versa, how the school can pass on its experience to the artists and also the education department here at CA2M.

Working in parallel to the educational project, Mercedes Álvarez undertook research into the potential of the working model developed by the art centre’s educational team with artists and teachers. On this occasion, the emphasis of the parallel research has taken various experimental approaches, questioning the very model of evaluation within culture. A publication with the results for last years’ course is available at Between the Museum and the School

In this seminar, all the participating agents in the project — artists, teachers, educators and researchers — will present the projects undertaken and we will evaluate their impact and contents.

CA2M has invited the filmmaker Pili Álvarez and the researcher Mercedes Álvarez to undertake research on the project by the El Banquete collective within its Artist at Work artist-in-residence programme. The goal is to produce an audiovisual work that will examine the project’s critical and practical challenges. It is viewed as a kind of device for the critical analysis of an art project at a school. The film will be based on sequences recorded as live cinema that follow up the main characters: teachers, artists, educators and students.

As the students begin to appropriate the space and the pyramid begins to gain in presence, conflicts start to arise that not only affect the children involved in the construction of the pyramid. The frictions question other agents in the school that are affected by the autonomy of the group that inevitably questions the existing power structures in the school.

This audiovisual proposal looks into film’s ability to evince and to take part in educational processes and thus multiply the ways in which practices that operate on an relational level can be followed, shared and explored.

The process of postproduction will be finished during this school year and the film will be presented and distributed in 2017.

Can silence be fun? In this one-session school workshop Nilo Gallego and Magda Labarga will explore the possibilities of listening and of noise, as well as their connections with the urban space and life in society. What does listening to the city mean? Is it possible to listen in the middle of chaos? What different kinds of silence are there? How many different kinds can we listen to? In this third edition of the workshop we will be looking to expand the limits imposed up until now in the practice and will push back new boundaries for silence. Operating in parallel to The Triangle project, the Noise and the City workshop will partake in the reflections that arise and will establish a dialogue on the various forms that silence can adopt in the school space.

The session is divided into different stations or stops. First of all, everything is amplified in the Listening Room. Have you paid attention to your clothes rubbing together? Have you listened to the hairs on your head as they hit off one another? Or to the symphony produced by the zip on your coat? In the Sonic Viewing Room we will take a look at the city and experiment with its sounds and use them to compose the rhythm of passers-by walking on the streets. In the Noise Room, after listening to the soundtrack of our everyday lives, the Noise and the City orchestra will rehearse for a street parade. In it, other voices that emit new slogans, accompanied by pots and pans and whistles, will propose other rhythms for our neighbourhoods.

This activity is aimed at groups of primary school children and their teachers, who will have an opportunity to take part in an action in which communication exists, but in an alternative way, and where attention is based on logics other than conventional ones: What would happen if adults didn’t ask us to be quiet for the next two hours?
